Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary of Regina Branch 001 was formed in 1930, chartered under the Canadian Legion British Empire Service League (BESL). Mrs. Butcher was the first recorded President. Until the branch building was erected, meetings were held in various places.
The name was changed to Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion in 1960, to coincide with the Legion becoming the Royal Canadian Legion through Royal Assent obtained by the Hon. John Diefenbaker.
The Ladies Auxiliary Provincial Command disbanded in 2000. The Regina Auxiliary, along with all other Auxiliaries in the Province, became responsible to the relative branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.
During the war years, members were kept busy with projects such as Hostess House, meeting troop trains, knitting, sewing, and visiting veterans in hospital.
Funds were raised through various means – bake sales (some of which were held at the Co-op Store on Albert Street and Victoria Avenue) raffles, making and selling Christmas pudding, coat checks, etc., to name only a few.
The war ended and the Ladies Auxiliary welcomed many war brides to the organization. The membership, at one time, numbered approximately 400; however, that number has dwindled to a current membership of approximately 165. Although the widely known curling team has retired, the Ladies Auxiliary still plays golf regularly (at a par 3 we might add!).
As in the past, the Auxiliary supports the Branch financially, morally, and with many volunteer hours. Some of the major contributions include a wheelchair lift, a glass-washer for the Vimy Lounge, new drapery throughout the building, half the cost of the cafeteria dishwasher, a stair crawler and a major contribution toward the construction of a dumb waiter.
The Ladies Auxiliary continues to serve the community through
- Bursaries for local students
- Sponsoring local students to the Legion Track and Field Camp
- Supporting local hospitals and other charities
- Visiting veterans and Legion members in the local care homes and Wascana Rehabilitation Centre
- Assisting with the purchase of Christmas gifts for veterans in care homes, Wascana Rehab and shut-in members
- Sending a card and a small monetary gift on his or her birthday to veterans, members, and shut-ins
- Playing bingo and supplying lunch to the Wascana Rehab Veterans' Wing on a monthly basis
- Providing lunch on a monthly basis for the Wascana Happy Hour.
Fund raising activities continue today through bingos, raffles, teas, and catering. The Auxiliary plays a large role in the annual Poppy Campaign before Remembrance Day - the largest single fund raising event of the Legion.
This justifiably proud and dedicated group of women celebrated their 75th Anniversary in 2005 and, along with pledging their valuable support to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 001, continue to provide caring and needed support to the entire community.
